BARCELONA · 1997/98 · JUST BEFORE EVERYTHING CHANGED
Some jerseys stand for a victory. Others for a player. This one stands for almost an entire transition.
The 1997/98 Barça jersey
In the summer of 1997, FC Barcelona changes. Ronaldo leaves Catalonia after just one season. Louis van Gaal takes over on the bench. New players arrive, among them a Brazilian from Deportivo La Coruña.
Around him, the squad tells the story of its era perfectly. Luís Figo. Pep Guardiola. Luis Enrique. Hristo Stoichkov. Giovanni. Sonny Anderson. Different personalities, styles and generations. And behind them, the Camp Nou. Huge. Raw. Packed.
Jerseys were looser. Matches were still discovered in newspapers, on TV or in magazines. And designs had enough character to be recognised twenty-five years later.
Rivaldo and the start of a new era
Following Ronaldo is no gift. Barça chooses another Brazilian. Taller and leaner. More discreet. Left-footed. Able to shoot from distance, dribble, create and score.
In 1997, nobody knows what comes next. Not yet the Ballon d’Or. Not yet the free kicks. Not yet the moves that would become famous in the blaugrana jersey.
Before the memories, there was a first season.
The double
The season ends with two trophies: La Liga and the Copa del Rey. A domestic double. Rivaldo makes a successful start, and Barça is back at the top of Spanish football.
But something is ending too.
Just before everything changed.
The last Barça in Kappa
Throughout the 90s, Kappa and Barcelona built an instantly recognisable visual identity. The stripes. The shoulders. The repeated logos. The colours.
1997/98 is the last season of this partnership before the switch to Nike. So this jersey isn’t only tied to a winning season: it marks the end of an aesthetic. The following year, Barça already had a different silhouette.

Le maillot
Blaugrana. Kappa. 1997.
Red. Blue. And a host of details that instantly place the jersey in the 90s. The blaugrana vertical stripes structure the whole front, edged with navy piping. The contrasting shoulders carry the repeated Kappa silhouettes, and tone-on-tone Barça and Kappa patterns appear in the red stripes. No big commercial sponsor in the middle of the chest: just the stripes, the crest and the Kappa...
