The club was founded under the name Newton Heath LYR, the team for Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway workers. It became Manchester United in 1902, then moved to Old Trafford in 1910, in the southwest of the city. Red has been with the club since its early decades and has never left it.
From Newton Heath to Europe
Old Trafford was bombed in March 1941. The club played its matches at Maine Road, the home of their neighbors, until 1949, while the stadium was being rebuilt.
Matt Busby took over the team in 1945 and built a generation of very young players, the Busby Babes. On February 6, 1958, the plane bringing the team back from Belgrade crashed during takeoff in Munich. Eight players died.
Busby rebuilt. On May 29, 1968, at Wembley, United beat Benfica 4-1 and became the first English club to win the European Cup. Bobby Charlton, a Munich survivor, scored twice. George Best and Denis Law were on the same team.
TEN YEARS AFTER MUNICH, UNITED LIFTED THE EUROPEAN CUP.
Wearing the colors of Manchester United means continuing that legacy: a club of railway workers, a stadium destroyed and then rebuilt, a team cut down and then restored.
