Everton had been playing there since 1884. A disagreement over rent with John Houlding, the stadium's owner, prompted Everton to move to Goodison Park, which opened in August 1892. Houlding kept the stadium and launched his own club on March 15, 1892; it took the name Liverpool Football Club the following June 3. The club has never changed its address since, and red has become its hallmark.
The Kop and the Boot Room
In 1906, a stand was built behind one of the goals. It was nicknamed Spion Kop, after a hill in South Africa where many British soldiers, many from the local area, fell during the Boer War. The name stuck. The stand became the club's vocal focal point.
Bill Shankly arrived in 1959 at a second-division club. He transformed a boot storage room into a workspace: the Boot Room. Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan, and Reuben Bennett prepared matches there with him. From this room came decades of titles.
On May 25, 1977, in Rome, Liverpool beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1 to win their first European Cup. Kenny Dalglish signed the following summer.
