Ali Sami Yen and a few schoolmates from Galatasaray High School found a club and give it the name of their school, heir to the Galata Palace. The initial colors soon give way to yellow and red, which have remained unchanged ever since. The club is based on the European shore of the Bosphorus; its supporters fill both.
The Uncrowned King, then Copenhagen
In the 1950s and 1960s, Metin Oktay scores so many goals that he ends up being called Taçsız Kral, the Uncrowned King. He has remained the benchmark for all strikers who have passed through the club.
For a long time, Galatasaray played at Mecidiyeköy, in the old Ali Sami Yen stadium, famous throughout Europe for the noise generated there. The club left it in 2011 for the Ali Sami Yen Sports Complex, in the north of the city.
May 17, 2000, Copenhagen. Nil-nil against Arsenal after extra time, then 4-1 on penalties: no Turkish club had ever won a European trophy before. Three months later, in Monaco, Mário Jardel scores twice against Real Madrid and adds the Super Cup. In Copenhagen, Gheorghe Hagi on the pitch and Fatih Terim on the bench; in Monaco, the team is already managed by Mircea Lucescu.
In 2000, Turkish football ceased to be a guest in Europe.
