Ajax belongs to a city of canals, bricks, and bicycles, and red and white there are as much a part of the neighborhood as they are of football. The club played at De Meer, in the east of the city, for a long time before moving in 1996 to the stadium that became the Johan Cruyff Arena in 2018.
Total Football, then the generation of 1995
At the turn of the 1970s, Rinus Michels established a style of play where everyone could occupy each other's position. Johan Cruyff became its face, while Johan Neeskens, Ruud Krol, and Arie Haan were its cogs. Three consecutive European Cups, from 1971 to 1973.
The club has never had the resources of the giants that surround it. So, it produced its own players. Its academy delivered Marco van Basten, Frank Rijkaard, Dennis Bergkamp, Clarence Seedorf, and Edwin van der Sar. It moved in 1996 to Sportpark De Toekomst — the future.
May 24, 1995, Vienna. Louis van Gaal's Ajax beats AC Milan 1-0. Patrick Kluivert, having come on as a substitute, scores five minutes from the end. He is eighteen years old.
