Dortmund is a city in the Ruhr, in North Rhine-Westphalia. Mining and the steel industry shaped its population, and its club inherited a fanbase from them: numerous, loyal, and loud. Yellow and black have been its signature since its first decades.
The Yellow Wall
The Westfalenstadion opened in 1974, built for the World Cup hosted in Germany. It houses the Südtribüne: one hundred meters wide, a single continuous standing terrace, with nearly twenty-five thousand seats. The largest in Europe. No boxes or tiers to break up the block. Hence the name given to it by the rest of the continent: the Yellow Wall.
On the pitch, 1997 remains the benchmark year. Dortmund won the Champions League in Munich, against Juventus, then the Intercontinental Cup a few months later. Matthias Sammer as libero, Andreas Möller in front of him, Michael Zorc in the middle, Lars Ricken coming on as a substitute to score with a lob seconds after touching the grass.
The club has since experienced highs and rough periods, including financial ones. The terrace, however, has not budged.
