Dortmund is a club you come to see on its own turf. Its most significant moments, however, were written on grounds that were not its own.
Hampden Park, in the storm
May 5, 1966, Glasgow, Cup Winners' Cup final against Liverpool. The rain is falling so hard it nearly drowns the pitch. There are 41,657 of them in an arena that can hold a hundred thousand. Dortmund wins 2-1 after extra time. No German club had ever won a European competition before.
May 25, 2013, Wembley. The first Champions League final between two German clubs. İlkay Gündoğan equalizes with a penalty, Arjen Robben scores in the 89th minute. Dortmund leaves London defeated 2-1. Some road trips count as much as victories.
Between these two dates, decades of travel. The fans follow, filling entire away sections, and make themselves heard in stadiums where they are guests.
