Outside of Munich, Bayern changes roles. It no longer represents a city or even a region: it becomes the name to which German football is compared abroad. That position is defended on the road.
Three nights outside of Germany
May 26, 1999, Camp Nou. Bayern holds the Champions League final until stoppage time, then concedes two goals from Manchester United. For a long time, Barcelona remained a name one avoided mentioning in the club's hallways.
May 23, 2001, San Siro. Same competition, different city, two years later. Valencia opens the scoring with a penalty in the third minute; Stefan Effenberg equalizes with a penalty in the second half. No goals in open play that night. In the penalty shootout, three Valencia attempts are stopped by the Munich goalkeeper. Bayern leaves Milan with the trophy.
August 23, 2020, Estádio da Luz. A final played in Lisbon in an empty stadium, without a single supporter in the stands. A single goal, a header by Kingsley Coman. Silence was part of the setting.
