Bayern plays in red and white and bears the blue and white diamond of Bavaria on its crest. As much a regional club as a city club: the south of Germany has put its name to it.

Rejected in 1963

The first national title arrives in 1932. Then nothing for a long time. When the Bundesliga was created in 1963, Bayern was not selected: it was 1860 Munich that represented the city. The club was promoted in 1965, with a generation that would displace everything.

Sepp Maier in goal, Franz Beckenbauer at the back, Gerd Müller up front. Three positions, one decade. Between 1974 and 1976, Bayern won the European Cup three times in a row. Beckenbauer transformed the role of sweeper there: a defender who brings the ball up instead of clearing it.

Next came Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Lothar Matthäus, Oliver Kahn—captains more than stars. The club left the Grünwalder for the Olympiastadion in 1972, then moved into the Allianz Arena in 2005. In the 1990s, the press nicknamed it FC Hollywood, for its internal affairs more than for its style of play.

Red has accompanied Bayern since its Munich beginnings. A requirement rather than a decoration.
