Madrid, Turin, and goals scored away

May 28, 1969, Santiago-Bernabéu Stadium. As the first Dutch club to play in a European Cup final, Ajax lost 4-1 to AC Milan. Their European journey began with a defeat on foreign soil.

April 29, 1992, Stadio delle Alpi. First leg of the UEFA Cup final against Torino: 2-2. The return leg in Amsterdam ended in a 0-0 draw, and Ajax won the trophy thanks to away goals. A title won in Turin, a fortnight earlier.

March 5, 2019, the Bernabéu once again. 4-1 to Ajax: Hakim Ziyech, David Neres, Dušan Tadić, and then Lasse Schöne with a free kick. Real Madrid had never lost like that at home in the European Cup.

April 16, 2019, Turin. Donny van de Beek equalizes, Matthijs de Ligt scores with a header in the 67th minute: 1-2 for Ajax in Turin, and a spot in the semi-finals.

Ajax has always played better where they were least expected.
