Arsenal was born in an arms factory.
1886, Woolwich, southeast London. Workers from the Royal Arsenal factory formed a team and named it Dial Square, after the building topped with a sundial. It became Royal Arsenal, then Woolwich Arsenal. In 1904, it was the first team from the south of England to play in the First Division.
Crossing the Thames
In 1913, the club left south London for Highbury, in the north. The following year, it dropped the word Woolwich and became Arsenal. The rivalry with neighbors Tottenham dates from this move.
Herbert Chapman was appointed manager in 1925. He reorganized the game around the WM formation, championed numbers on shirts and floodlighting, and in 1932 succeeded in having Gillespie Road tube station renamed Arsenal, the only station on the London network to bear the name of a club. He died of pneumonia in January 1934, in the midst of a string of titles.
Seventy years later, the 2003/04 team went an entire league season without losing a match. They are called the Invincibles. The club moved to the Emirates Stadium in 2006, just a few hundred meters from Highbury.
