FC Barcelona was born around a Swiss man, Hans Gamper, who became Joan in Catalonia. Blue and garnet soon became more than just two colors: the way a city defines itself. In the 1960s, a phrase took hold and never left the club—més que un club.
From Les Corts to Camp Nou
The club first grew at the Camp de la Indústria, then moved to Les Corts in 1922. The number of members reached the thousands: there were over twelve thousand by the club's twenty-fifth anniversary in 1924. In 1950, the arrival of Ladislao Kubala changed the scale: the stadium became too small for the crowds it drew. The Camp Nou opened in 1957.
1973: Johan Cruyff signed in August and debuted in October. By the end of that same season, the title returned to Barcelona for the first time since 1960, and a 5-0 win at the Bernabéu entered the club's history. Cruyff returned in 1988, this time as coach. His Dream Team won at Wembley in 1992, thanks to a free kick by Ronald Koeman.
In the meantime, La Masia had done its job: training players in Barcelona for Barcelona. An idea of the game passed down from one generation to the next rather than bought on the market.
