FC Barcelona has spent part of its history outside of Spain, and not just to play.

Mexico, Basel, Rome

1937. The Civil War had emptied the coffers, and the club was facing a deficit of 170,000 pesetas. A tour was organized in Mexico, ten matches, then four more in the United States. The proceeds were kept safe in a bank in Paris until the end of the conflict. Several players did not return: Ventolrà, Gual, and Pedrol stayed in Mexico; Balmanya, Escolà, and Zabalo settled in France. The club survived thanks to a trip.

May 16, 1979, St. Jakob Stadium in Basel. Cup Winners' Cup final against Fortuna Düsseldorf. Thirty thousand Catalan supporters made the journey to Switzerland. Barcelona won 4-3 after extra time, with goals from Tente Sánchez, Asensi, Rexach, and Krankl.

May 27, 2009, Olympic Stadium in Rome. Samuel Eto'o scored in the tenth minute, Lionel Messi in the seventieth. 2-0 against Manchester United, in a city that was not its own, in front of all of Europe.
