Founded on April 26, 1903, by three Basque students, it began as a Madrid branch of Athletic Bilbao and initially adopted its blue and white. Red and white arrived in 1911. One version of the story holds that these stripes were cut from mattress ticking, the cheapest fabric on the market. The nickname stuck: colchoneros, the mattress makers.
Fifty years by the Manzanares
From 1966 to 2017, Atlético lived on the banks of the Manzanares at the Vicente Calderón, a stadium crossed by a highway. Half a century in the same place. The club then moved to the Metropolitano, which takes the name of the ground it had already occupied in the 1920s.
On May 15, 1974, in Brussels, Atlético was leading the European Cup final thanks to a Luis Aragonés free kick. Schwarzenbeck equalized in the final seconds. The replay two days later ended 0-4. It is the only replayed final in the history of the competition, and it fell to Atlético. Despite everything, Atlético took the winner's spot in the Intercontinental Cup and won the 1974 edition, played in the spring of 1975.
Adelardo in midfield for seventeen seasons, from 1959 to 1976; Aragonés as a player then coach; Paulo Futre on the wing in the 1980s; Kiko in the title-winning team of 1996: Madrid hasn't forgotten them.
