The end of the 90s had a different scent of football. We discovered results in the newspapers, we waited for the big European nights all week long. And at the Santiago Bernabéu, a generation of Real Madrid was experiencing its final great nights together.

1999. Just before everything changed.

The jerseys were looser. The collars higher. The sponsors simpler.

Raúl wore the 7. Fernando Redondo directed the midfield with almost insolent elegance. Roberto Carlos owned his left flank. Hierro commanded, Morientes scored. And a very young goalkeeper named Iker Casillas was just beginning to write his story.

This was not yet the Real of the Galácticos. Figo had not arrived. Neither had Zidane, nor Ronaldo, nor Beckham. It was a different Madrid. Rawer. More unpredictable. Perhaps even more human.

A season that wasn't supposed to end like this

1999/00 was not a quiet season. Results in La Liga were inconsistent, John Toshack left the bench, and Vicente del Bosque took the reins. Madrid was looking for balance and finished far from its standards in the league.

Everything pointed to a season that would soon be forgotten. But Real Madrid has an old habit: when Europe starts talking business, something changes.

An imperfect season. A perfect night.

The European nights

The Champions League then became another story. Porto, Olympiacos, Molde. Then Bayern Munich, crossed twice on the road. And Manchester United, the defending champions, eliminated on their own turf—with that backheel from Redondo at Old Trafford that people are still talking about.

Packed stadiums, away trips, nights where that white jersey appeared under the floodlights. Little by little, a hesitant season became a campaign. Then an adventure. Then a final.

Paris. May 24, 2000.

Real Madrid against Valencia. The first European Cup final between two Spanish clubs, at the Stade de France—in a city that already holds a special place in Madrid's history: it was in Paris that the very first European Cup was lifted, in 1956.

Morientes strikes first. A header. 1–0.

Then comes Steve McManaman. A volley. 2–0.

And finally Raúl. The number 7 races toward goal, rounds the goalkeeper. 3–0.

The match is over. Madrid is European champion. Once again.

La Octava. The eighth. A season that sometimes seemed lost has just joined history.
