On September 23, 1944, in a Lille metropolitan area that needed rebuilding, Olympique Lillois and Sporting Club Fivois merged. Both were founding members of the first French professional championship, one of which, Olympique Lillois, had been the very first French champion in 1933. The club's red and white colors originate from there.
Baratte, the Dogues, the long haul
The early years were the most prosperous. Jean Baratte, a center-forward from Olympique Lillois who was present from the 1944 merger, scored 218 goals in Lille's colors and remains the top scorer in the club's history. The championship title was won in 1946, then again in 1954. The French Cups followed in quick succession: 1946, 1947, 1948, then 1953 and 1955. The post-war LOSC won without any fuss, match after match.
Then came the long haul. Decades without a title, seasons spent in the division below, and a fanbase that stayed nonetheless. The nickname "Dogues" (Mastiffs) says enough about what the region expects from a team: that it bites, that it holds its ground, that it doesn't give up on a match before the final whistle. A war machine, the press said of the 1946-1956 team; the nickname hasn't been used since.
In 2011, Lille reclaimed both trophies in the same year, the league and the French Cup, just as in 1946, with Eden Hazard leading the way that season. Another championship title followed in 2021. In the meantime, the club left its old walls for the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, which opened in 2012 in Villeneuve-d'Ascq.
