AS Monaco was founded on August 23, 1924, through the merger of four clubs from the Principality and Beausoleil. The club's red and white colors are those of the Monegasque flag, and it was in the early 1960s that the club established itself for good among the giants of French football.
The Rock and the Louis-II
Monaco first played at Les Moneghetti, then in an initial Louis-II stadium inaugurated in 1939. The current stadium, opened in 1985 in the Fontvieille district built on reclaimed land, bears the same name, that of Prince Louis II. A stadium built above a parking garage, a pitch just a few meters from the Mediterranean, stands that never fill up like those elsewhere. Monaco has turned this anomaly into a way of existing.
The first French league title arrived in 1961, under Lucien Leduc, who in 1963 added the only league and cup double in the club's history. In 1987, Arsène Wenger took over the team. He was a champion as early as the 1987-1988 season. He brought in a twenty-one-year-old Liberian striker from Tonnerre Yaoundé in Cameroon, whom almost no one had seen play in Europe, George Weah, and six years later launched a seventeen-year-old striker spotted in Les Ulis and trained at the club, Thierry Henry. The Rock never had the means to buy established players: it learned to recognize them beforehand.
On May 26, 2004, in Gelsenkirchen, AS Monaco played its first Champions League final. Porto won 3-0. It is the journey of that season that has endured, not the score.
