Saupin, La Beaujoire and the "Nantes style" of play
The club was born on April 21, 1943, from the merger of several Nantes clubs. It played at Marcel-Saupin until 1984, a stadium on the banks of the Loire that had become too small. La Beaujoire, envisioned by president Louis Fonteneau and built in sixteen months, was inaugurated on May 8, 1984, before 30,000 spectators against Romania. The stadium now carries both names.
Between 1960 and 1976, José Arribas established a style of play: constant movement, playing without the ball, and collective decision-making. Sports journalism would later give it a name: the "jeu à la nantaise." French league titles followed in 1965 and 1966, then in 1973, 1977, 1980, and 1983. Philippe Gondet, Henri Michel, and Maxime Bossis were its faces.
The true home record is a record on the pitch. From May 15, 1976, to April 7, 1981, Nantes did not lose a single league match at Marcel-Saupin: ninety-two games, eighty wins, twelve draws. AJ Auxerre put an end to that.
The move to La Beaujoire did not break the momentum. The titles of 1995 and 2001 were won there, before an audience that has kept the habit of judging the style just as much as the result.
