The finals first. On June 16, 1979, at the Parc des Princes, Nantes beat Auxerre 4-1 in the Coupe de France. Three more finals would follow at the Stade de France: Sedan beaten 1-0 in 1999, Calais 2-1 in 2000, Nice 1-0 on May 7, 2022.
Europe next. Cup Winners' Cup semi-final in 1980, eliminated by Valencia. Then the spring of 1996: Champions League semi-final against Juventus, a 2-0 defeat in Turin, a 3-2 victory in the return leg. One goal behind, and the finalist goes through.
That team had just written the club's other great chapter. In 1994-1995, Jean-Claude Suaudeau's team, with an average age of twenty-three, did not lose its first match until the thirty-third matchday, at Strasbourg. Patrice Loko and Nicolas Ouédec were up front.
Then there is what Nantes exports. Didier Deschamps, Marcel Desailly, Christian Karembeu, and Claude Makélélé all passed through the training center before going on to win far from the Loire. In terms of rivalries, Saint-Étienne was the great adversary of the 1960s and 1970s; Rennes remains the most anticipated derby.
