The Cauldron
In 1919, the employees' association of the Société des magasins Casino set up a football section. The club became the Association Sportive de Saint-Étienne on June 26, 1933. The green, taken from the brand's logo, remained.
Geoffroy Guichard, the founder of Casino, bought the land on May 19, 1930. The stadium that bears his name was inaugurated on September 13, 1931, with a one-thousand-seat grandstand and an athletics track. Today, it holds nearly forty-two thousand, distributed between the Charles-Paret, Jean-Snella, Pierre-Faurand, and Henri-Point stands, with the crowd right up to the pitch, in the English style.
On November 6, 1974, Les Verts hosted Hajduk Split after a 4-1 defeat in Yugoslavia. They won 5-1. That night, the stadium earned its nickname: The Cauldron.
The first French championship title came in 1957. Then 1964, four in a row from 1967 to 1970, three more from 1974 to 1976, and the one in 1981. Jean Snella, Albert Batteux, then Robert Herbin on the bench; Hervé Revelli up front, Jean-Michel Larqué in midfield, Michel Platini for the last of those seasons. The Coupe de France arrived first in 1962, then in 1968, 1970, 1974, 1975, and 1977.
Green does not belong to a jersey: it belongs to a city.
Casino provided the color, Geoffroy Guichard the land. The city did the rest.
