March 3, 1976. Kiev is under snow; the quarter-final first leg against Dynamo is relocated to Simferopol, in Crimea: the longest trip ever made by the club up to that point. A 2-0 defeat, an own goal by Dominique Bathenay and a free kick by Oleg Blokhin. The return leg, played on March 17, turns everything around.
In the semi-final, qualification is once again decided outside the Loire: a 0-0 draw scraped in Eindhoven against PSV, after a narrow victory in the first leg.
May 12, 1976, Hampden Park, Glasgow. Nearly thirty thousand Stéphanois supporters made the trip. Bayern Munich wins 1-0 on a Franz Roth free kick. A twenty-five-meter strike from Bathenay and a header from Jacques Santini hit the bar—square posts, the likes of which were almost nowhere to be found in major stadiums anymore. Dominique Rocheteau comes on in the 83rd minute. The phrase has stuck: the final of the square posts.
On May 13, the team drives down the Champs-Élysées in a convertible, before being received at the Élysée Palace by Valéry Giscard d'Estaing.
Glasgow is the most famous defeat in French football.
A final lost in Scotland, and a team returning as heroes. French football has never closed this chapter.
