In the 1950s and 1960s, tens of thousands of workers left the South for the Fiat factories, Mirafiori above all. The club made the journey in reverse: it headed back down toward Campania, Puglia, and Sicily, then followed Italian emigration beyond its borders. It was nicknamed la Fidanzata d'Italia, the fiancée of Italy.
Bilbao 1977, Tokyo 1985
May 18, 1977, San Mamés. Second leg of the UEFA Cup final. Juventus lost 2-1 in Bilbao but won on away goals, 2-2 on aggregate. It remains the only victory by an Italian club in an official European competition with an all-Italian starting lineup.
December 8, 1985, National Stadium in Tokyo. Intercontinental Cup against Argentinos Juniors. 2-2, then penalties, which Juventus won. No European club had yet won this trophy in Tokyo.
Umberto Agnelli, a long-time club executive, recounted that the possibility of going to watch Juventus play had been a factor in the choice of Turin for migrants during the great years of the exodus. The stands filled up with people from elsewhere.
The black and white had left Turin long before the players.
