Founded by the English, anchored in Seine-Maritime
The multi-sports club was founded on October 20, 1884, at the initiative of Jeffery Edward Orlebar, pastor of the British Episcopal Church in Le Havre. The football section opened ten years later, in 1894. The club long claimed 1872: historians have never found any documentary evidence for this date. The nickname, however, has stuck. "The Dean."
The club's lore suggests that the sky blue and navy are a compromise between former students of Cambridge and Oxford. This story comes from a 1948 book signed by a club president, with no archival evidence to support it. The English heritage can be heard elsewhere: the Le Havre supporters' anthem uses the melody of God Save the King.
The Stade Jules-Deschaseaux served as home for a long time, until its final season in 2012. On July 12, 2012, the Stade Océane was inaugurated with a gala match against Lille. Twenty-five thousand seats, the largest football stadium in Normandy.
The club has been training players since 1984 on the Rue de la Cavée Verte. Vikash Dhorasoo, Jean-Alain Boumsong, Steve Mandanda, Ibrahim Ba: four paths that started from the same Le Havre training ground, all leading to the French national team.
In Le Havre, football arrived by sea and never left.
