Le Gym is a club of the seaside and the hills, nestled between the Var river and the Italian border.
From the Ray to the Allianz Riviera
It all began on July 9, 1904, at the Pergola, on Avenue Carlone in the Baumettes district, with the creation of a gymnastics and athletics society. The football section did not open until 1908. The name Olympique Gymnaste Club arrived in 1924. A century later, supporters still say "le Gym"; the players, meanwhile, are the Aiglons (the Eaglets).
On January 30, 1927, the club took possession of the Stade du Ray, inaugurated with a 3-2 victory. This would be their home for over eighty years, a stadium embedded within the buildings of the north of the city. In September 2013, the club moved to the Allianz Riviera, in the west of Nice, with over 36,000 seats.
The 1950s remain the golden era. French champions in 1951 after an improbable comeback: last after six matchdays, Nice ended up winning 4-0 against Stade Français on the final day. The title was retained in 1952, a first in the history of the championship. Then 1956, under the leadership of Luis Carniglia, and 1959.
Just Fontaine wore the red and black from 1953 to 1956: 52 goals in 83 matches, including five in a single game against Lens in January 1954, and twenty goals during the 1954-1955 season. A half-century later, a goalkeeper trained at the club made his professional debut at the Ray on October 26, 2005: Hugo Lloris, 2-0 against Châteauroux, a clean sheet.
Le Gym owes its name to gymnasts who had not planned on playing football.
