The club was born on August 3, 1950, from the football section of the Lyon Olympique Universitaire. A city of confluence, a city of silk and industry, Lyon calls its children "les gones": the nickname stuck to the team. White, red, and blue—the colors of Olympique Lyonnais have never changed.
From Gerland to Décines
Gerland first. The stadium emerged from the ground in 1926; OL played there from 1950 to 2016, sixty-five years in a brick arena located in the south of the city. It was there that Fleury Di Nallo became a household name in French football. It was there that the first French Cups arrived: 1964 against Bordeaux, 1967, then 1973 against Nantes. Three cups, and nothing in the league. For a long time, Lyon remained a club of one-off nights, capable of a feat, but never a full season.
On May 4, 2002, at Gerland, Lyon beat Lens and became champions of France. Then 2003. Then 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008. From 2002 to 2008, the title never left the Rhône: seven seasons in a row, a streak never before seen in the French championship. The free kicks of Juninho Pernambucano, Grégory Coupet in goal, and a presidency under Jean-Michel Aulas who was already managing the club like a business when no one else was.
In 2016, OL left Gerland for Décines-Charpieu, to the east of the metropolitan area, and a stadium that the club had built itself. Nearly sixty thousand seats. The move says something about Lyon: here, we prefer to build rather than wait.
