Bollaert-Delelis, the city and the mine
Racing Club de Lens was founded in 1906. Contrary to legend, it did not emerge directly from the mining settlements: its founders were tradespeople and minor notables. The Lens Mining Company only took it under its wing in the early 1930s, and the end of mining subsidies in the late 1960s would briefly send it back to amateur status.
It was Félix Bollaert, president of the Mining Company, who decided to build the stadium in 1931. Inaugurated on June 18, 1933, it bears his name. In September 2012, the city council added that of André Delelis, mayor of Lens for more than thirty years, who protected the club and the stadium when the coal industry came to an end.
38,223 seats for a municipality of about 32,000 inhabitants. The stadium fills its Trannin, Delacourt, Lepagnot, and Marek-Xercès stands with the entire metropolitan area. The attendance record dates back to February 15, 1992: 48,912 spectators against Olympique de Marseille. The first Lens supporters' club was founded in 1926.
The stadium hosted Euro 1984, the 1998 World Cup—including a victory for the French team against Paraguay—and Euro 2016. On the pitch, Maryan Wisniewski in the 1950s, Ahmed Oudjani and his goals in the 1960s, then Éric Sikora, who arrived in 1985 and left in 2004 after 590 official matches and an entire career at a single club.
In Lens, attendance has never depended on the standings.
Blood and gold is not just worn as a club color. In the mining basin, it is a sign of recognition between neighbors.
