Auxerre, Wembley and the big nights on the road
May 9, 1998. Lens heads into the final matchday with a two-point lead over Metz. In Auxerre, Sabri Lamouchi opens the scoring, Yoann Lachor equalizes. Metz wins simultaneously in Lyon, but the Lens draw is enough: tied on points, goal difference hands Racing the 1997-1998 French league title, the first in its history.
November 25, 1998, Wembley. Arsenal was hosting its Champions League matches in the old London stadium at the time. Mickaël Debève scores, Lens wins 1-0 in front of 73,000 spectators and becomes the first French club to win on that pitch.
The 1999-2000 UEFA Cup continued the trend: a 4-1 win at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion in Kaiserslautern, a 2-2 draw snatched in Madrid against Atlético, then a 0-0 in Vigo that opened the door to the semi-finals. The run ended in the semi-finals against Arsenal: 1-0 at Highbury in the first leg, 2-1 for the English in the return leg at Bollaert. In the meantime, in 1999, a volley from Daniel Moreira had secured the Coupe de la Ligue against Metz. That was the era of Vladimír Šmicer, Marc-Vivien Foé, Tony Vairelles and Guillaume Warmuz.
Then there is the Northern derby, against LOSC. The two neighbors battled for a trophy very early on: on May 10, 1948, in Colombes, Lille beat Lens 3-2 in the Coupe de France final before more than 60,000 spectators. Since then, Lens-Lille is played to a full house on both sides, and the journey is part of the match.
Racing has never needed its home stadium to write its greatest chapters.
