Stade de Reims bears the name of its city, not that of a neighborhood. Red and white were adopted with the 1938 merger with the Sporting Club rémois, and have been part of the Champagne club's identity ever since.
From Pommery to Delaune
It all began with the Société sportive du Parc Pommery, founded at the end of 1910 to bring together employees of the champagne house. On June 18, 1931, it changed its name to Stade de Reims. The first match was played on August 23 of the same year. It won the French amateur championship title in 1935, followed by promotion and the transition to professional status.
The municipal stadium opened on Chaussée Bocquaine in the mid-1930s and hosted a match during the 1938 World Cup. After the war, it was renamed in honor of Auguste Delaune, a sports executive and resistance fighter who died in September 1943 as a result of torture. Renovated between 2004 and 2008, it has a capacity of just over twenty thousand seats. Its four stands bear local names.
The great seasons began there. French champions in 1949, then in 1953, 1955, 1958, 1960, and 1962. French Cup winners in 1950, then in 1958, the year of the double. Albert Batteux managed the team, Henri Germain presided over it for more than three decades, and Robert Jonquet held the line for eighteen seasons. Roger Piantoni took care of the rest.
A club that bears the name of neither a neighborhood nor a factory, but that of the entire city.
The city and the club share the same name. It is rarer than one might think.
