The roads of Europe
June 1953. Reims edged past Valencia 2-1 in the semi-finals in Porto, then beat Milan 3-0 in the Latin Cup final in Lisbon on June 7, with a brace from Raymond Kopa and a goal from Francis Méano. Reims remains the only French club to have won this competition.
Two years later, the club competed in the first edition of the European Champion Clubs' Cup. It eliminated Denmark's Aarhus and Hungary's Vörös Lobogó, then won 1-0 at Easter Road, on the pitch of Hibernian in Edinburgh. On June 13, 1956, at the Parc des Princes, Reims led 2-0 against Real Madrid but lost 4-3. Kopa left for Madrid in the aftermath and returned in 1959.
The second final was played far from everything. On September 17, 1958, in Belfast, Reims won 4-1 against Northern Ireland's Ards, with four goals from Just Fontaine. Then came Helsinki, Standard Liège, and the Young Boys of Bern, beaten 3-0 in the return leg. On June 3, 1959, at the Neckarstadion in Stuttgart, Real Madrid won 2-0. Fontaine finished as the competition's top scorer with ten goals.
The club also exported its players. At the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, six players from Reims were in the French squad that finished third, and Fontaine scored thirteen goals. In France, the most significant trip led to the Ardennes, to Sedan: the derby that the old guard considers the only true one.
From Lisbon to Stuttgart, Reims taught French football about Europe.
