It all began on January 1, 1906, in the Neudorf district, under the name FC Neudorf. In 1919, following the return of Alsace to France, the club became Racing Club de Strasbourg. Blue and white have accompanied it ever since. In Alsace, people simply call it "Le Racing."
La Meinau
The stadium bears the name of its neighborhood. The first wooden stand was built in 1921, followed by a concrete expansion in 1951, and a complete reconstruction finished on April 17, 1984. La Meinau hosted the 1938 World Cup and its wildest match, Brazil vs. Poland, which ended 6-5 after extra time. In 1984, it hosted the Euro match between West Germany and Portugal in front of more than 44,000 spectators.
1979. With Gilbert Gress on the bench, the team won a French championship title with a largely Alsatian squad: Léonard Specht, Albert Gemmrich, Jacky Duguépéroux, Jacques Glassmann, Roland Wagner, and Jean-Jacques Marx, several of whom were trained at the club. Arsène Wenger and Raymond Domenech were also part of it. Seven Alsatians and a homegrown coach.
Before them came René Hauss: 516 matches in the Racing jersey between 1949 and 1968, including 424 in the league. The French Cup titles of 1951, won against Valenciennes, and 1966, against Nantes, belong to this long era.
Racing is not just a city's club; it is a region's club.
Strasbourg's blue and white tell this story: a neighborhood, a stadium, and an Alsace that sees itself reflected within.
