The Camp Nou coin toss
Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, 1964-1965 season. Racing beats AC Milan 2-0 in the first leg, loses 1-0 at the San Siro, and advances. FC Basel then falls, 6-2 on aggregate. Next comes FC Barcelona: 0-0 in Strasbourg, 2-2 at the Camp Nou, then a play-off match also at the Camp Nou, which ends 0-0 as well. Qualification is decided by a coin toss. It lands on the right side. In the quarter-finals, Manchester United proves too strong, but Strasbourg holds them to a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford.
European Cup 1979-1980. Racing knocks out IK Start, then Dukla Prague, and falls in the quarter-finals to Ajax Amsterdam: 0-0 in Alsace, 4-0 in Amsterdam.
UEFA Cup 1997-1998. The Glasgow Rangers fall twice, 2-1 and 2-1. Then Liverpool: beaten 3-0 in Alsace, winner 2-0 at Anfield, not enough. Racing advances and only stops in the round of 16 against Inter Milan: 2-0 in the first leg, 0-3 in the return leg in Milan. Two years earlier, in 1995, the Intertoto Cup had already come home to Strasbourg.
A coin toss at the Camp Nou: Racing was never afraid of places too big for it.
In France, there is the Eastern derby. Metz is 130 kilometers away, two former capitals, Lorraine across from Alsace, a shared history and decades of meetings. And there is Saint-Denis: on May 26, 2001, a French Cup won against Amiens, 0-0 then 5-4 on penalties.
