Gijón, and what followed
June 16, 1982, El Molinón. Algeria plays the first match in its World Cup history against West Germany, which had been crowned European champions two years earlier. Rabah Madjer opens the scoring. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge equalizes. Lakhdar Belloumi immediately restores the lead. 2-1.
What followed remains famous for the wrong reasons: the final group match, played after Algeria's, suited both European teams and eliminated the Fennecs. FIFA learned its lesson from this, and ever since, the final group matches have been played at the same time.
This generation is remembered as a whole: Belloumi, Madjer, Salah Assad, Ali Fergani. Madjer would later score one of the most talked-about goals in European football, a backheel in the 1987 European Cup final.
In 1990, Algeria hosted the Africa Cup of Nations and won it on home soil, at the 5-Juillet, against Nigeria. They were crowned champions again in 2019, in Egypt. In between, in 2014, they reached the round of 16 of a World Cup for the first time.
