The nickname came first. The style that would win everything, much later.

Spain has no designated home stadium: it plays everywhere from Seville to San Sebastián. Red and navy blue have defined its identity since the first national team selections. The current federation dates back to 1913, succeeding an initial structure created in 1909.

From Furia to short passing

Antwerp, 1920. Spain plays its first international tournament and leaves with the Olympic silver medal. The press gives it a nickname that would stick for decades: the Furia. Commitment, speed, duels.

1950, Brazil: fourth place, long the country's best World Cup result. 1964: Spain hosts the European Championship and wins it at the Santiago-Bernabéu, 2-1 against the Soviet Union. Pereda opens the scoring, Marcelino seals the win with a header six minutes from time.

Then nothing, for a very long time. Telmo Zarra, Luis Suárez — 1960 Ballon d'Or winner —, Emilio Butragueño: great players, and missed tournaments. Spain dragged around a reputation as a team that couldn't convert.

The turning point came from the style of play. Short passes, possession, a dominant midfield. Euro 2008 in Vienna, 2010 World Cup in Johannesburg — Andrés Iniesta in the 116th minute —, Euro 2012 in Kyiv. Xavi, Iniesta, Carles Puyol, Iker Casillas: three tournaments in a row.

Forty-four years between Euro 1964 and the next one, then four years at the summit.
