The eleven that never hosted

April 13, 1958. Professional players leave their French clubs to join the National Liberation Front team: Mustapha Zitouni and Abdelaziz Ben Tifour leave Monaco, Rachid Mekhloufi Saint-Étienne, Mohamed Maouche Reims. FIFA threatens sanctions against any federations that agree to play them.

The team plays for four years without ever hosting a match: first in the Maghreb, then Eastern Europe in 1959, then China and Vietnam in the autumn of the same year. It is dissolved in 1962, giving way to the official national team.

March 22, 1980, Lagos National Stadium. Algeria plays in the first Africa Cup of Nations final in its history, in the host country. Nigeria wins 3-0, with two goals from Segun Odegbami and one from Muda Lawal.

November 18, 2009, Al-Merreikh Stadium in Omdurman, Sudan. A play-off match against Egypt on neutral ground, with thousands of supporters having come from Algeria to fill the stands. Antar Yahia hits a volley in the 40th minute: 1-0, and qualification for the World Cup, the first since 1986.

A national team that began its history without a stadium of its own.

From Tunis to Lagos, from Lagos to Omdurman: the most important moments have often taken place far from Algiers.
