A country turned toward the ocean, and a national team that took fifty years to win.

Portugal plays in Lisbon just as it does in Porto, without a designated home stadium. Red and green are the colors of the national flag; the federation itself was founded in 1914. From this flag comes the team's nickname, A Seleção das Quinas.

Goodison Park, then the wait

1966, England. Portugal competes in its first World Cup and reaches the semi-finals. In the quarter-final, at Goodison Park, they are down 0-3 to North Korea after twenty-five minutes. Eusébio scores four goals. Portugal wins 5-3, then finishes third in the tournament. Eusébio emerges as the top scorer, with nine goals.

Then, the wait. A long one. A generation formed in the late 1980s puts the country back on the map: world champions at the U-20 level in 1989, then again in 1991, they produce Luís Figo and Rui Costa. Figo would go on to win the Ballon d'Or in 2000.

In 2004, Portugal hosts the Euros and loses the final in Lisbon to Greece. Twelve years later, in France, they finally win: Éder scores in extra time, and the Seleção's first major title is secured in 2016. Three years later, the country wins the first Nations League, in Porto.
