Seoul, and the word Teranga
May 31, 2002, World Cup opening match. Senegal plays the first match in its history in the competition, against France, the then-world champions. Papa Bouba Diop pushes the ball into the net off a cross from El Hadji Diouf. 1-0. The goal remains, as does the celebration around the jersey placed near the corner flag.
This tournament was no fluke. A 3-3 draw against Uruguay, a round-of-16 win against Sweden, a quarter-final loss to Turkey on a golden goal. Aliou Cissé wore the captain's armband, Khalilou Fadiga anchored the midfield.
Before this generation, Jules Bocandé paved the way in Europe, first at Metz and then at Paris Saint-Germain. After them, Senegal established itself at the top of the continent: crowned African champions in February 2022, in Cameroon, on penalties against Egypt.
The capital long lived to the rhythm of the Léopold Sédar Senghor Stadium, opened in 1985. In February 2022, the country inaugurated a new 50,000-seat arena in Diamniadio, on the outskirts of Dakar.
Senegal has turned a word of welcome into a nickname, and that nickname into a way of playing.
