The Deutscher Fußball-Bund was founded on January 28, 1900, in Leipzig, by representatives of eighty-six clubs. The team played its first international match in 1908, in Basel, against Switzerland. It plays in black and white: these colors come from the flag of Prussia, the state that dominated Germany at the time football was becoming established there. The kingdom ceased to exist in 1918. The white remained.
Bern, 1954
July 4, 1954, Wankdorf Stadium. Puskás's Hungary has been undefeated for years and already beat Germany 8-3 in the tournament. In the final, they lead 2-0 after eight minutes. The team led by Fritz Walter and coach Sepp Herberger fights back, then takes the lead with six minutes left through Helmut Rahn. The country calls it the Miracle of Bern. Nine years after the war, this match meant far more than football.
Then came the decades of consistency. Franz Beckenbauer, who reinvented his position by pushing forward from defense. Gerd Müller, a penalty-box striker, never far from the post. Lothar Matthäus, a midfielder capable of covering an entire flank for ninety minutes. Three positions, three generations.
Berlin, Munich, Dortmund, Hamburg: the federation moves its matches from one city to another, and Berlin's Olympiastadion hosts the major national finals.
Germany has no national stadium: it has an entire country.
The German white is committed to this idea of the collective, the same one for over a century.
