What the Mannschaft represents abroad can be summed up in one word: consistency. A team that few countries like to host, and that many have had to face on their own turf.
Wembley, Rome, Wembley
April 29, 1972, Wembley. European Championship quarter-final first leg against England. Germany won 3-1: Uli Hoeneß opened the scoring, Günter Netzer converted a penalty in the 85th minute. It was the first victory for a German national team on English soil. This team would long be known as the Wembley-Elf, the Wembley eleven.
July 8, 1990, Olympic Stadium in Rome. World Cup final against Argentina. A world title that came down to a single shot, scored in Rome.
June 30, 1996, Wembley again. European Championship final against the Czech Republic. Trailing after a Patrik Berger penalty, Germany equalized through Oliver Bierhoff in the 73rd minute, then won 2-1 with a golden goal by the same player in the 95th. Twenty-four years after Netzer, the same stadium.
Between these three dates, Germany played qualifiers from Belfast to Tbilisi and final tournaments on three continents.
Three decisive evenings, none played in Germany.
