The name comes from Harry Hotspur, the nickname of Henry Percy, whose family owned land in Tottenham. In 1884, to avoid confusion with another club called Hotspur, it becomes Tottenham Hotspur.
The Lane, then the double
The club moved to White Hart Lane in 1899 and remained there until 2017. The current stadium was built on the same site and opened in 2019. In nearly a century and a half, Tottenham has hardly left its street.
Bill Nicholson became manager in 1958. In 1960/61, his team won both the league and the FA Cup in the same season: the first English double of the 20th century. Danny Blanchflower was the captain, and Jimmy Greaves was the goalscorer for the seasons that followed.
On May 15, 1963, in Rotterdam, Tottenham beat Atlético Madrid 5-1 in the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup. No British club had yet won a European trophy.
