Molineux, then Amsterdam
May 3, 1972, Molineux. The first leg of the first UEFA Cup final in history, and the first European final between two English clubs. Tottenham traveled to Wolverhampton in front of 38,362 spectators and won 2-1. Martin Chivers scored both goals, the second with a twenty-five-meter strike three minutes from time. The return leg in London ended 1-1: the trophy was contested and won first away from home.
May 8, 2019, Johan Cruijff Arena. Champions League semi-final second leg. At halftime, Ajax led 2-0 on the night and 3-0 on aggregate. Lucas Moura scored in the 55th minute, a second time four minutes later, and a third in the sixth minute of stoppage time. 3-2 on the Amsterdam pitch, 3-3 on aggregate, qualification via away goals.
Between these two nights, forty-seven years, thousands of kilometers, and generations of supporters boarding a train or a bus because the team is playing far away.
