A title lost at home. A jersey cast aside.
The Brazilian Football Confederation was founded in 1914, the year the national team played its first match in Rio de Janeiro. Brazil played in white back then. On July 16, 1950, at the Maracanã, in front of a crowd of over one hundred and fifty thousand people, they let the world title slip away against Uruguay in the decisive match. The country calls that day the Maracanazo. The white kit did not survive it.
A contest, a teenager, a color
In 1953, a Rio newspaper launched a contest: to design an outfit that combined the four colors of the flag—green, yellow, blue, white. The winner was named Aldyr Garcia Schlee. He was nineteen years old, an illustrator, living near the Uruguayan border. His yellow proposal was adopted for the 1954 World Cup and has remained with the national team ever since.
Four years later, in Sweden, a seventeen-year-old boy named Pelé scored in the final. The world discovered what Brazil calls the jogo bonito. In 1970, in Mexico, the team of Pelé, Jairzinho, Tostão, and Carlos Alberto played a style of football whose highlights still circulate today.
The Maracanã, opened in 1950 in Rio, remains the benchmark setting. The stadium has been downsized, renovated, and redesigned. It is still called the Maracanã.
Brazil lost in white, then it won in yellow.
The yellow of the Seleção comes from that: a country that turned its worst football memory into its hallmark.
