Florence, Paris, Querétaro

May 31, 1934, Florence. World Cup quarter-final against Italy, the host nation. 1-1 after extra time, in a match whose brutality remains famous. Goalkeeper Ricardo Zamora left the field injured. The next day, on the same pitch, the match was replayed: Giuseppe Meazza scored with a header and Spain went home.

June 27, 1984, Parc des Princes. European Championship final against France. Michel Platini's free kick slipped past Luis Arconada shortly before the hour mark, Bruno Bellone scored in stoppage time. 0-2. A final lost in Paris, in front of a crowd entirely supporting the opponent.

June 18, 1986, Querétaro. World Cup round of 16 against Denmark. Spain won 5-1, with four goals from Emilio Butragueño. One of the most talked-about evenings in the history of the national team, played nearly nine thousand kilometers from Madrid.

Spain learned international football by playing in other people's backyards.
