Marseille, Eindhoven, Gelsenkirchen

June 23, 1984, Vélodrome Stadium in Marseille. European Championship semi-final against France. Rui Jordão equalized in the 74th minute, then gave Portugal the lead in the 98th, in extra time. France turned the match around in the final six minutes and won 3-2. Portugal exited the tournament moments away from a final.

June 2000, Eindhoven. Portugal was trailing England 0-2 after eighteen minutes of play. Luís Figo narrowed the gap with a long-range strike, João Pinto equalized before the break, and Nuno Gomes scored the third before the hour mark. 3-2, in the Netherlands, in a neutral stadium.

July 1, 2006, Gelsenkirchen. World Cup quarter-final against England, in Germany. 0-0 after extra time. Goalkeeper Ricardo saved three penalty kicks and then converted the last one. Portugal advanced 3-1 and finished the tournament in fourth place.

Wherever Portugal travels, a part of the country is already settled there.

Marseille, Eindhoven, Gelsenkirchen: three foreign cities, three evenings etched in Portuguese memory.
