Tunis, Bamako, Cairo

November 1965, Tunisia. Senegal competes in the first Africa Cup of Nations in its history. A draw against the host country, a 5-1 victory over Ethiopia, and a fourth-place finish. An introduction played entirely away from home.

February 13, 2002, 26 March Stadium in Bamako. AFCON final against Cameroon. Zero-zero after extra time, a 3-2 loss on penalties. Senegal leaves Mali without the trophy.

July 19, 2019, Cairo International Stadium. Another continental final, against Algeria. In the second minute, Baghdad Bounedjah's shot is deflected and drops into the Senegalese goal. 0-1. Two continental finals played far from Dakar, both times one move away from the title.

Between these meetings, the country has become accustomed to leaving. African qualifiers are won on distant pitches, in heat and altitudes that do not resemble those of the Atlantic coast.

Senegal made a name for itself in stadiums that did not belong to it.

Fifty-four years separate Tunis from Cairo. None of these three evenings took place in Dakar.
